The galaxy above
(called
M51) is actually visible with binoculars on a clear night. The
size of M51 is
60,000 light years across (one light year
= 5.8 trillion miles), has billions of suns, and is about 30 million light
years from Earth. It is one of 3 galaxies that can be seen with the
naked eye, this one is near the end of the Big Dipper's handle.
The fascinating thing is that M51 is one of
trillions of galaxies in this
Universe and NASA has proven it.
YES the Universe is HUGE, yet how
BIG is it really?
Let me describe what NASA has found. Your
typical galaxy (like the Milky Way) contains between 1 billion to
several trillion stars. Each star (or sun) has the potential of having
planets like ours orbiting them. Just recently NASA has discovered a
planet that is very similar to ours in water, land, atmosphere and size.

Now this is where things get really interesting... |

According to recent NASA Hubble photos taken from the "deep field"
(up to 13 billion light years away), they estimate that
within a "circle of space" you'd see that is the size of the moon
there are 100,000 galaxies! WOW!
Just imagine
filling up the entire night sky with moons that are EACH filled with
100,000 galaxies!
What this means
its that you could shoot a laser from Earth in any direction straight out into infinity,
you are going to hit not just a star, but an entire Galaxy!
So when you look out at the skies at night in any direction, there
is actually a galaxy somewhere waaaay out there, wherever you look
into "empty space".
This deep black
"empty" Universe you see
is literally FILLED with Galaxies!!

field. If you were looking at these photos from the earths perspective,
each photo contains 10,000 galaxies and
thus would take up a section of space (from Earth's perspective) that is
only
one tenth the size of the moon!
