How The Truth Will Set You Free
Written by Jafree Ozwald and Margot Zaher
“The truth that makes people free is often the truth which people prefer not to hear.” ~Herbert Agar
What is Truth? Is it just the opposite of a lie? How do you know what is true and what isn’t true inside your heart? Understanding truth can be as simple as what is true for you in this moment. You are reading this sentence now. This is true. You are breathing, watching, experiencing being alive now, these facts are also true. Yet what is biggest truth for you? One thing we’ve discovered about truth is that there are many levels or degrees to it, just like a rainbow has different shades of color to it. While all the colors are different, they blend together perfectly and yet are refractions originating from the same pure white light. There are many different perspectives about the same truth. Some truths can have more substance, emotion and passion, while others may find the same truth very hidden and subdued. For example, two people may be in love, yet the relationship may feel truer for one person than the other. So how do you discover what is true for you?
“I’m for truth, no matter who tells it. I’m for justice, no matter who it’s for or against.” ~Malcolm X
To endlessly find your truth, explore what is happening inside your body. Your body is the most accurate barometer of how true something is for you. When something is really true for you, your body (especially your heart) tends to open, soften and expand. When an action or situation has a smaller truth to it, your whole being tends to feel tight, contracted or simply not at ease. If you are always making decisions based on what makes your heart feel lighter, freer, and more expansive, you will continuously have the feeling of coming home to yourself. This is how every decision becomes the “right” decision in your life. There are no “wrong” decisions, its just knowing which choices are truer for you. Just go with what feels the most expansive, and you’ll never feel regret or indecision again. The more your heart follows your truth, the more you can open up, trust life and become that awesome gift that you are to this world.
“The greatest truth must be recognition that in every man, in every child is the potential for greatness.” ~Robert Kennedy
Any decision you have to make in life your body inherently “knows” how to come to the right decision. You can learn to trust it. The body is a highly sensitive instrument and will respond to the smallest of feelings occurring within. Honor this sensitivity and you will find freedom. The body never lies. The truth you are seeking can easily be found through being present to the body. Just a subtle relaxing inside, so that you can sense when something is false, contracted or less true for you and let your heart find its way home. When you feel uneasiness in the body around something you feel is true, it is simply a catalyst to help you become more aware and sensitive to life. This divine sensitivity is the only way you will truly be free. Once you can honor these uncomfortable feelings, confrontations within, and welcome the fear that you have about your life, every moment delivers you directly to the Divine. What would it be like if you could really allow the most uncomfortable feelings that you have to simply be here now?
“Lying is the most simple form of self-defense.” ~Susan Sontag
Your body cannot lie to you, whereas your mind can fabricate a million and one stories. The mind will take the “facts” and evidence from the outer world to make a case to support any idea you want. Yet you’ll see that the mind is attached to what it wants, and is not truly free inside. The mind is talented at justifying any action, belief, judgment or decision it makes, yet when it comes to being free it often wobbles and can’t make the simplest movement home. When you live your life from your mind or intellect, it can serve you to discriminate which path is logical and practical, yet is not the best barometer for what is the most expansive, real and true. So check with your heart and relax into the core of your being. There is something profound in there that the mind cannot comprehend, and yet your heart knows is the most powerful thing in this Universe.
“If you cannot find the truth right where you are, where else do you expect to find it?” ~Dogen
Let’s do a quick exercise that will help you discover your own personal truth. So take a few deep breaths….breathe deeply and slowly now…. now say out loud, “Yes my name is (fill in your name).” How does your body feel when you say this? Do you notice any feeling of expansion or easiness around your chest? Then say, “Yes my name is (use someone else’s name).” Notice how your body responds. Did you feel any subtle tightening or holding anywhere in the chest? Remember that the body’s response can be subtle or obvious, it just depends on how in touch you are with this amazingly sensitive instrument. The more you can sensitize yourself to your body, the more you’ll be able to know what is more true for you in your life. The more you practice listening to your body, feeling what is inside, sensing what is happening for others, the more you’ll naturally discover the unique signals for truth and untruth inside you.
“At each and every moment from here on out, have the intention to directly experience Truth, your true liberated Self. Don’t think about the Truth—directly return to your experience here, now, moment to moment. Experience Truth. Experience your Self. Dive into your experience. Your experience!” ~Adyashanti
Sometimes discerning your truth can feel as difficult as finding an eyelash at the city zoo. The habitual tendency is to search outside yourself, yet we eventually return to know what is the most true for us on the inside. We may yearn to know others opinions of us to help us define who we are. This outer search is an unconscious strategy to control the outer world. It stems from a deep misunderstanding that “you” are not the wizard of OZ behind the curtain running the show. This ancient habit is wrapped up in hiding, fearful that if everyone knew that this monumental truth was real, you’d be destroyed or cast out of society. The biggest truth of all is that you are connected to an unlimited source of divine intelligence, love and awesome power. When you allow for this truth to be more important than anything anyone believes (especially you), you start channeling an outrageous amount of exuberance into your life. The outer search is not wrong, in fact it is necessary to eventually bring you back to realize what’s really true for you inside. It just happens that the more you avoid from looking inside, the more you’re missing out on the glorious divine being you really are.
“There are three things that cannot long be hidden… the sun, the moon, and the truth.” ~Confucious
Knowing and living from your deepest inner truth is the most liberating experience in life. When you stop hiding out in ego masks, pretending to be somebody, resisting intimacy, and needing to control your loved ones, you stop living a life that is cut off from love. When you turn your attention and dive deep within, you will start discovering the magnificent beauty of your being, and will know what is “right” for you at a core soul level. As you align with your innermost essence, your deepest truth, you begin operating from a more empowered way of being. Every conversation you have becomes an opportunity for you to go deeper inside, and really discover this divine essence you truly are. Hiding from this great truth inside blocks your manifesting vibration and keeps you from focusing creative energy on attracting the experiences you desire. So find out what is your truth in each moment. Each moment is a monumental step towards consciously manifesting your heart’s desires. If you hide from what is true for even one minute, you will find it unreasonably difficult to master your life.
“Your theory is crazy, but it’s not crazy enough to be true.” ~Niels Bohr
We’ve found that the trickiest thing about this journey to discovering your truth is that it may not be what your ego desires. It may even feel scary to do something true for you today that may give you a more fearful experience of life tomorrow. For example, if you don’t get along with your spouse, father, mother, or siblings, it may be extremely difficult to tell them that you love them, respect them and are very thankful for their existence. This may be devastating hard for the ego to speak, yet is a truth that will only create more love, peacefulness and freedom down the road. So you may actually get to stretch a bit in life, and release your attachment to a few negative beliefs in order to be the person you truly want to be. You know what is right in the core of your being. So take the risk to truly grow in your life, this is the only risk worth taking.
“Truth never explains why it’s moving that way at that moment. It would be like a leaf asking the wind, “Why are you moving that way right now?” ~Adyashanti
Keep in mind that finding what is true for you in one moment may not be as true for you tomorrow. Discovering who you are is a wondrous mysterious journey home. And yet living moment by moment uncovering your truth is the backbone of liberation from your mind/ego. It’s about living the question in each moment that asks, “Who am I?” When you speak, act and live fully from this divine question, you discover the greatest truth of all: You are and have always been an infinite magical being that is more powerful than you could ever imagine. So enjoy the journey of discovering who you are. It is a wild ride. Your uniqueness is the pathway to finding your truth of truths, and the massive freedom that comes your way will offer you an absolutely radical new way of being in this world. Enjoy!
